In alot of ways yes it is, not to sure on all the specs but almost everything I'v read says that the 8800 superclocked is the same as a 9800 and way cheaper. They have the next gen cards coming out soon that are supposed to rock though.

FTW=F@ck the world= better than everyone/thing else out there.

I hear this is a very nice card

Here is a good review with some tests done

But there is a huge difference in prices :

As we're writing this, you can purchase a BFGTech GeForce GTX 280 OCX for $439.99 USD after rebate. A standard GeForce GTX 280 can be had for $409.99 USD after MIR, and an ATI Radeon HD 4870 is available for $274.99 USD with free shipping.
Is this big difference worthy ??
I mean will we find a big difference in performance ?

And here is a review for graphics cards made by 3dmark vantage :

Test Results: We normally don't include CPU tests in our video card benchmarks, but it looks like we might have to start. With the NVIDIA PhysX driver installed the CPU score on our system the GeForce GTX 260 and GeForce 9800 GTX+ take the lead with ease.

This means that Radeon HD 4870 Video Card take the lead in almost everything with a good price $274.99 while NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 has a price of $359.99 , and that let u use the extra money for something else.

i'm going to buy a new pc and i just made this thread to know the best graphics card but i think i'm so newbie in this and i need more time to figure what is good and what is bad and what is useless . so :
    can i ask u a question pls ?
why someone need 2*GPU in the same PC ( GPU=slots as i understood ) and if that's mean dual memory like 2*512 why not to buy a card with 1 GB already .??? many questions need answers but let me start with this one .....

cuz its not just the memory that gets doubled, but also the process power (now you have 2 graphic processing units(GPUs) and twice the memory) note: in reality, you dont get 2x the performance gain, but like 50-80%

theres also other + to have 2 video cards like you can buy the second video card later when the prices fall. its also sometimes cheaper to go sli/cf
example: when the 8800gt came out, it was about half the price of the 8800gtx but a bit slower. Go SLI(buy 2) of the 8800gt and you get way better performance for the same price as the 8800gtx

i recommend go with a ati card right now like 4850 which is about $200
can also take a look at tomshardware.com video card roundups -August -http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card,1987.html

hope u understood most of this
    happy to help anytime

the differents between the these cards is minimal. They differ in ways like customer service, product warranties, price, design(like heatsink/fan), and sometimes a small overclock. Look for these differences
and as you imagine they diff in quality. Go to cheap and the card might now last long.

sorry, im not familiar with ati's gpu based cards so cant recommend a specific one

AMD is at the top now?

I haven't checked reviews yet but does the Radeon HD 4870 X2 have the top benchmarks in games as of now?

Mmmm cause the prices of the 8800GTX have gone down. I mean I saw someone selling his 8800GTX for $125 and I was very tempted to get it to go SLI but I would like to know how does the 8800GTX SLI compare to the AMD's Radeon HD 4870 X2 now. I bought my 8800GTX when it came out for $750 cause it just wiped anything else that was out.
